One Hour Can Change Your Entire Chart
"Can I get a Saju reading without my birth time?" — one of the most common questions in Korean astrology. The short answer: yes, but with significantly reduced accuracy.
Saju Palja means "Eight Characters." Without your birth hour, two of those eight characters (25%) are missing. Worse, the Hour Pillar interacts with all other pillars — losing it doesn't just remove data, it changes the entire interpretation.
Someone born on May 15, 1990 at 10:00 AM and someone born the same day at 11:30 PM won't just have different Hour Pillars — depending on the midnight rule applied, they may have entirely different Day Pillars, making them essentially different charts.
The 12 Double-Hours
Saju doesn't use the modern 24-hour clock. Instead, it divides the day into 12 periods of 2 hours each (시진, Sijin), each mapped to one of the 12 Earthly Branches:

The Midnight Trap: Night Ja-si vs. Morning Ja-si
The trickiest time in Saju is Ja-si (子時, 23:00–01:00) — because it straddles midnight, spanning two calendar days.
The big question: "If you're born at 11:30 PM, does your Day Pillar belong to today or tomorrow?"
Midnight splits Ja-si into two halves
Ya-Ja-Si (夜子時) — 23:00 to 00:00
"Night Ja-si." Some schools assign this to the previous day's Day Pillar, while others assign it to the next day. This remains one of the most debated topics in Saju practice.
Jo-Ja-Si (朝子時) — 00:00 to 01:00
"Morning Ja-si." Most schools agree this belongs to the current day's Day Pillar.
The Day Pillar is the center of Saju analysis (your Day Master = your core self). A one-day difference means all 10 God relationships are recalculated. If you were born between 11 PM and 1 AM, consult with an experienced practitioner.
True Solar Time: Clock Time ≠ Sun Time
Korea Standard Time (KST) is based on the 135°E meridian (UTC+9). But Seoul sits at roughly 127°E — meaning the actual sun position in Seoul is about 30 minutes behind clock time.
When your clock reads 12:00 noon, the sun hasn't actually reached its highest point in Seoul yet. True Solar Time (진태양시, Jin-Taeyang-Si) corrects for this difference.
Born at 05:10 AM (clock time) in Seoul → True Solar Time is approximately 04:40 AM. Since 05:00 is the boundary between In-si (寅, Tiger hour) and Myo-si (卯, Rabbit hour), this 30-minute correction shifts the Hour Pillar from Myo-si to In-si — a completely different reading.
Daylight Saving Time: Korea's Hidden Hour
South Korea doesn't currently observe DST, but it did 12 times historically. If you were born during these periods, subtract 1 hour from your recorded birth time:

If you were born between May and October during these years, your birth certificate time may be 1 hour ahead of actual solar time. Example: Birth certificate says "8:00 AM" → True time is "7:00 AM"
What If You Don't Know Your Birth Time?
- Check birth records: Hospital records or government registry offices often have exact times
- Ask family: Even approximate times ("morning," "after lunch," "late evening") help narrow down the 2-hour window
- Three-pillar reading: Year + Month + Day analysis is still meaningful for personality and major life cycles, though less precise
