The 5 Types of Earthly Branch Interactions in Saju

Mystic Universe · March 2026

Why Should You Learn Hapchunghyeongpahae?

The eight characters that form a Saju chart — four Heavenly Stems and four Earthly Branches — do not exist in isolation. Between these characters, complex relationships unfold: attracting, colliding, wounding, and disrupting each other. These are the five interaction types known as Hap (Combination) · Chung (Clash) · Hyeong (Punishment) · Pa (Break) · Hae (Harm).

These interactions operate not only in your natal chart but also in your Major Luck Cycles (Daewoon) and Annual Luck (Sewoon). For example, if the Earthly Branch of this year forms a Clash with a branch in your chart, sudden changes may arise. If it forms a Combination, new relationships or opportunities may come your way. Understanding these interactions completely transforms the depth of Saju interpretation.

Key Point:
Hapchunghyeongpahae is the "grammar of relationships" in Saju. If individual characters are words, then these interactions are the rules that determine how those words connect in a sentence. Without understanding them, you can read a chart but cannot truly interpret it.

1. Hap (Combination) — Attraction & Transformation

Hap is a relationship where two characters attract each other and transform into a new type of energy. Much like two people who meet and gradually change through mutual influence. Combinations occur in both Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches, with different meanings depending on the type.

Heavenly Stem Combinations (Cheongan Hap)

Among the 10 Heavenly Stems, five specific pairs form Stem Combinations. These are Yin-Yang pairs that merge to produce a new Five Element energy.

When a Stem Combination exists in your chart, the original nature of the involved characters weakens, and the transformed element's characteristics tend to emerge. In practice, this can be interpreted as strong attraction, meaningful connections, and cooperative relationships.

Six Harmonies (Yukhap)

Among the 12 Earthly Branches, six specific pairs form the Six Harmonies. These represent intimate, one-on-one relationships.

Three Harmonies (Samhap)

Samhap occurs when three Earthly Branches come together to form a single powerful elemental energy. Broader in scope than Six Harmonies, Three Harmonies tend to manifest in social and organizational relationships.

Directional Combinations (Banghap)

Banghap occurs when three branches from the same direction (season) come together to maximize that elemental energy. Even more powerful than Three Harmonies, but all three branches must be present.

A chart with many Combinations tends to indicate smooth interpersonal relationships and a talent for cooperation. However, too many Combinations can weaken personal initiative or lead to indecisiveness, so overall balance must also be considered.

2. Chung (Clash) — Head-On Collision

Chung is a relationship between Earthly Branches positioned directly opposite each other. When the 12 branches are arranged in a circle, the six pairs facing each other form Clashes. Clashes carry energy of conflict, change, and separation, but they can also serve as turning points that break through stagnation.

Having a Clash in your natal chart tends to bring major changes and ups and downs in life. But Clashes are not always negative. When a Clash breaks apart unfavorable energy, it can redirect things in a positive direction. Clashes are frequently found in the charts of people who grow through change.

3. Hyeong (Punishment) — Mutual Wounding

Hyeong literally carries the meaning of "penalty" or punishment. While Clashes are head-on collisions, Punishments are conflicts that build gradually from within. They tend to manifest as legal disputes, health issues, or interpersonal friction.

Three Punishments (Samhyeong)

Self-Punishment (Jahyeong)

When the same Earthly Branch appears twice, it creates Self-Punishment — internal conflict, anxiety, or self-destructive tendencies.

Charts with Punishments tend to require awareness of legal issues, health concerns, and relationship conflicts. However, when the energy of Punishment is channeled well, it can lead to great ability in careers that resolve conflicts — such as law, medicine, or counseling.

4. Pa (Break) — Quiet Disruption

Pa is less dramatic than Clash or Punishment, but it carries the energy of silently breaking apart relationships or situations. Things fall through at the last moment, or relationships develop quiet cracks over time. Break has the nature of interfering with Combinations, which is why it is sometimes called "the relationship that undoes Hap."

Break is generally weaker than other interactions, but when it coincides with Clash or Punishment, the negative effects can be amplified. If your chart contains Break, thorough review and double-checking when completing tasks is advised.

5. Hae (Harm) — Jealousy & Interference

Hae arises from interference with Six Harmony combinations. When two branches are trying to form a Harmony, a third branch comes between them to disrupt it. This tends to manifest as invisible sabotage, jealousy, envy, or betrayal.

Harm is not as dramatic as Clash, but it has the quality of slowly corroding relationships over time. When Harm exists in your natal chart and also appears in your luck cycles, be alert for unexpected interference in your relationships.

6. Practical Applications of Branch Interactions

These interaction types are not abstract theories. Their influence can be felt throughout daily life. While Saju alone does not determine everything, understanding these energy flows can help with self-understanding and improving relationships.

In Relationships

When many Combinations exist between your chart and another person's, the relationship tends to feel natural and comfortable. Conversely, many Clashes may create an intense first impression but also frequent conflicts. Interestingly, in romantic relationships, a touch of Clash can actually help maintain tension and attraction.

In Career

People with Clashes tend to adapt better to dynamic environments rather than staying at one job for a long time. Those with Three Harmonies can shine in teamwork and organizational cooperation. Those with Punishments may have aptitude for problem-solving fields such as law, medicine, or counseling.

In Timing

When Clash arrives in your Major or Annual Luck, expect major turning points like job changes, moves, or relationship shifts. When Combination arrives, look forward to new connections such as marriages, partnerships, or opportunities. When Punishment arrives, consider getting health check-ups or preparing for potential legal issues.

The Modern Saju Perspective:
Branch interactions cannot be simply categorized as "good" or "bad." A Clash may break apart negative energy, while a Combination may weaken personal initiative. What matters is understanding the role each interaction plays within the full context of a chart.

Furthermore, these interactions represent flows of energy, not fixed fate. Understanding which interactions exist in your chart empowers you to consciously harness that energy for better decisions.
